Environment of a Cisco IOS or IOS-XE device, by SNMP
Returns, for each temperature sensor, fan and power supply of a Cisco IOS or IOS-XE device, its state as the device judges it against its own thresholds, and each temperature. Three watches are offered: a hardware fault, a high temperature, and a part missing.
How it works
The collector reads the three status tables of CISCO-ENVMON-MIB: ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusTable, ciscoEnvMonFanStatusTable and ciscoEnvMonSupplyStatusTable.
- A part is named by the description the device gives it (
Switch 1 - FAN 1,Switch 1 - Power Supply A); one without a description by its sort and its index (fan 2). Two of the same name each keep their own, the second carrying its index. - The state is
CiscoEnvMonStatein words:normal,warning,critical,shutdown,not-present,not-functioning. The device judges it against its own thresholds: "Hardware fault" raises a warning onwarning, critical oncritical,shutdownandnot-functioning. - A part
not-present, such as an empty power supply slot, raises nothing. - The temperature is
ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusValue, in degrees Celsius. - A device that serves none of the three tables stops the collector as misconfigured.
The collector only reads: SNMP sends nothing but reads.
Prerequisites
- The SNMP agent of the device enabled, reachable from the poller (UDP 161), its access restricted to the poller.
- The view granted to the poller includes
ciscoEnvMonMIB(.1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.13). - Read-only access, SNMPv2c or SNMPv3, set on the host or one of its folders (
protocol:snmp:*variables). - Versions: IOS and IOS-XE. It sits under
ios/because CISCO-ENVMON-MIB is the MIB of that family: NX-OS keeps its sensors in the entity MIBs, to read bynetwork/snmp/sensorswhere its agent serves ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB.
Outputs
| Name | Label | Unit | Per instance |
|---|---|---|---|
state | State | — | yes, per part |
temperature | Temperature | °C | yes, per part |
Watches
| Name | Title | Kind | Defaults | Checked by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
fault | Hardware fault | state to avoid, on state | warning on warning; critical on critical, shutdown and not-functioning | yes |
hot | High temperature | above a threshold, on temperature | no threshold: the device already judges its own in "Hardware fault" | no |
missing | Missing part | expected instances, on state | no part named: it raises nothing until names are set on the probe | no |
Limits
- The voltages (
ciscoEnvMonVoltageStatusTable) are not read: few recent devices serve them. - A power supply pulled out may leave the table rather than read
not-present, depending on the model: name the supplies in "Missing part" to see it. - That NX-OS serves no CISCO-ENVMON-MIB, and which parts a given model lists, are not verified here without a device.
