Processor and memory of a MikroTik RouterOS router, by SNMP
Returns the load of each processor of a RouterOS router and their average, the size of its memory and the share used. Three watches are offered: the processor saturated, one processor saturated, and the memory saturated.
Versions
RouterOS 6 and 7. It sits under routeros/ because SwitchOS does not serve HOST-RESOURCES-MIB: on a SwitchOS switch, it stops as misconfigured.
How it works
RouterOS serves HOST-RESOURCES-MIB, the standard MIB of a host's resources:
- The load is
hrProcessorLoad, one row per processor, in percent over the last minute, as the router averages it. The processors are namedcpu0,cpu1… in the agent's order. - The memory is the row of
hrStorageTablewhose type ishrStorageRam, which RouterOS namesmain memory: its size and its share used. - A router that serves no processor, or no memory row, stops the collector as misconfigured.
The hardware health (temperatures, fans, power supplies) is read by network/mikrotik/snmp/health.
The collector only reads: SNMP sends nothing but reads.
Prerequisites
- SNMP enabled on the router (
/snmp set enabled=yes), reachable from the poller (UDP 161), its access restricted to the poller. - Read-only access, SNMPv2c or SNMPv3, set on the host or one of its folders (
protocol:snmp:*variables).
Outputs
| Name | Label | Unit | Per instance |
|---|---|---|---|
cpu-busy | Overall processor usage | % | no |
core-busy | Processor usage | % | yes, per processor |
memory-total | Physical memory | MiB | no |
memory-used-percent | Used memory | % | no |
Watches
| Name | Title | Kind | Defaults | Checked by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
cpu-high | Processor saturated | above a threshold, on cpu-busy | warning above 80 %, critical above 90 %, for 3 runs | yes |
core-hot | A processor saturated | above a threshold, on core-busy | warning above 95 %, for 3 runs | no |
memory-high | Memory saturated | above a threshold, on memory-used-percent | warning above 80 %, critical above 90 %, for 3 runs | yes |
Limits
- On a router whose packets are handled by one core (a single queue, a single PPPoE session), one processor saturates while the average stays low: check "A processor saturated".
- The storage of the router (its flash) is not read.
- That SwitchOS serves no HOST-RESOURCES-MIB is not verified here without a device.
