Volumes of a Synology NAS, by SNMP
Returns, for each volume of a Synology NAS (/volume1, /volume2…), its used space, its free space and its size. Four watches are offered, each one set on the probe.
Versions
Generic: HOST-RESOURCES-MIB is the standard MIB that Synology's SNMP MIB guide gives for the disk space of DSM, from DSM 6.2.4. It stays at the common level.
How it works
The collector reads hrStorageTable (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1) and keeps the mounts named /volume followed by a number:
| Column | OID | Read as |
|---|---|---|
hrStorageDescr | .3 | the mount point, the instance |
hrStorageAllocationUnits | .4 | bytes per unit |
hrStorageSize, hrStorageUsed | .5, .6 | counts of units |
- The used space is used over size, as DSM's file system counts it.
- The other mounts of the table (memory, the system partition
/, USB disks under/volumeUSB1) are left out. - The collector only reads: SNMP sends nothing but reads.
Prerequisites
- The SNMP service of DSM enabled (Control Panel, Terminal & SNMP, SNMP), reachable from the poller (UDP 161), its access restricted to the poller.
- The view granted to the poller includes
host(.1.3.6.1.2.1.25). - Read-only access, SNMPv2c or SNMPv3, set on the host or one of its folders (
protocol:snmp:*variables).
Outputs
| Name | Label | Unit | Per instance |
|---|---|---|---|
used-percent | Used space | % | yes, per volume |
free | Free space | GiB | yes, per volume |
size | Size | GiB | yes, per volume |
Watches
| Name | Title | Kind | Defaults | Checked by default |
|---|---|---|---|---|
used | Used space | above a threshold, on used-percent | warning above 80 %, critical above 90 % | yes |
full-soon | Full within a week | above a threshold, on used-percent | warning above 99 %, ahead 7 d | yes |
free | Little free space | below a threshold, on free | critical below 10 GiB | no |
missing | Volume missing | expected instances, on used-percent | no volume named: it raises nothing until names are set on the probe | no |
Limits
- A volume that crashes and is unmounted leaves the table: it is seen through
missing, once its name is set, and bystorage/synology/snmp/raid. - A NAS with no volume, or a view without
host, stops the collectormisconfigured. - Not checked against a Synology: the OIDs are those of HOST-RESOURCES-MIB (RFC 2790) that Synology's SNMP MIB guide lists (last updated 2026-08-03); that DSM names its volumes
/volume1inhrStorageDescris not written in the guide.
