Temperatures of a Linux host, by SNMP
Returns the temperature of each hardware sensor the agent serves, in degrees Celsius. One watch is offered: a high temperature.
Versions
Generic: net-snmp serves lmTempSensorsTable (LM-SENSORS-MIB) from lm_sensors on any Linux where it is built with it; lmTempSensorsTemperature is read when the agent serves it, the older lmTempSensorsValue otherwise.
How it works
The collector reads lmTempSensorsTable (LM-SENSORS-MIB), which net-snmp fills from lm_sensors: one row per temperature sensor, named as lm_sensors names it (Package id 0, Core 0, temp1).
- The temperature reads in thousandths of a degree:
lmTempSensorsTemperature, signed, when the agent serves it, otherwise the olderlmTempSensorsValue. - Two sensors with the same name (
temp1on two chips) each keep their own: the second carries its index (temp1 #3). - A host where no sensor is read stops the collector as misconfigured, and says why: it never shows green on nothing.
- By default, all sensors are watched; the selection can be changed on the probe.
Prerequisites
snmpd(net-snmp) built withlm_sensorssupport (theucd-snmp/lmsensorsMibmodule), running on the host, listening on an address the poller reaches (UDP 161), with the firewall open to the poller only.lm_sensorsinstalled and its sensors detected on the host (sensors-detect, thensensorsshows them).- The view granted to the poller includes
lmSensors(.1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.13.16). - Read-only access, SNMPv2c or SNMPv3, set on the host or one of its folders (
protocol:snmp:*variables).

hot | High temperature | above a threshold, on temperature | warning above 80 °C, critical above 95 °C, for 3 runs | yes |
Limits
- A virtual machine has no sensors: deploy this collector on physical hosts only.
- Not every distribution builds net-snmp with
lm_sensorssupport; without it, the collector stops as misconfigured. - One threshold applies to every sensor; a sensor that runs hot by design (a chipset, a disk) can be left out by the selection.
