banshee is under active development: collectors will keep changing, and a version you publish will likely need adjustments. For stable use, wait for version 1.0.0.

Power over Ethernet of a MikroTik device, by SNMP

Returns, for each PoE port of a MikroTik router or switch, its PoE state, and, while it powers a device, the power it delivers, its voltage and its current; and the power delivered by the whole device. Four watches are offered: a PoE fault, a device unpowered, the power budget, and a port missing.

Versions

RouterOS 6 and 7, and SwitchOS, on a device with PoE out. The table is the same on both.

How it works

The collector reads mtxrPOETable (MIKROTIK-MIB), one row per PoE port, named by its interface name (ether2).

  • The state is mtxrPOEStatus in words: disabled, waiting-for-load (nothing to power), powered-on, and the faults overload, short-circuit, voltage-too-low, current-too-low, power-reset, voltage-too-high, controller-error, controller-upgrade, poe-in-detected, no-valid-psu, controller-init, low-voltage-too-low.
  • The power and the voltage are in tenths, which the collector divides; the current is in mA. They are returned for a port powered-on only.
  • The total power is the sum of the power of the ports powered-on.
  • A device that serves no PoE port stops the collector as misconfigured.

The collector only reads: SNMP sends nothing but reads.

Prerequisites

  • SNMP enabled on the device, reachable from the poller (UDP 161), its access restricted to the poller.
  • Read-only access, SNMPv2c or SNMPv3, set on the host or one of its folders (protocol:snmp:* variables).

Watches

NameTitleKindDefaultsChecked by default
faultPoE faultstate to avoid, on statuswarning on voltage-too-low, current-too-low, low-voltage-too-low, power-reset; critical on overload, short-circuit, voltage-too-high, controller-error, no-valid-psuyes
unpoweredDevice unpoweredstate to avoid, on statuswarning on waiting-for-loadno: choose the ports in the selection first
budgetPower budgetabove a threshold, on total-powerno threshold: the budget depends on the model and its power supplyno
missingPoE port missingexpected instances, on statusno port named: it raises nothing until names are set on the probeno

Limits

  • "Device unpowered" raises on every port without a device: check it once the selection keeps the ports where a camera or an access point is expected.
  • The state words follow MIKROTIK-MIB; which ones a given model reports is not verified here without a device.
